NORTH MALE [ KAAFU ATOLL ] : NORTHERN AREA

ERIYADHU CHANNEL

  
LOCATION : 4km (2 ½ mile) northwest of Eriyadhu Resort Island  
ACCESS : Eriyadhu Resort (30min)  
CONDITIONS : Exposed in the south to northwesterly winds; there can be a big swell if these winds are strong.  Currents can be very powerful, especially during the southwest monsoon.  
AVERAGE VISIBILITY : 25m [80ft]  
AVERAGE DEPTH : 20m [65ft]  
MAXIMUM DEPTH : 30m [100ft]  

AKIRIFUSHI CAVES

  
LOCATION : South side of Akirifushi uninhibited island.  
ACCESS : Eriyadhu (40min), Ziyaaraiyfushi (60min), Makunundu (60min)  
CONDITIONS : Exposed to southwest and northwest winds.  Currents can be strong in he centre of the channel.  
AVERAGE VISIBILITY : 25m [80ft]  
AVERAGE DEPTH : 25m [80ft]  
MAXIMUM DEPTH : 40m [130ft]  
       

OLAHALI BLUE CAVES

  
LOCATION : The north corner of Olahali Island Reef.  
ACCESS : Eriyadhu (60min)  
CONDITIONS : Sheltered in the southwest, but exposed to west and northwesterly winds.  Choppy conditions can develop in easterly winds.  Currents can be very strong.  
AVERAGE VISIBILITY : 25m [80ft]  
AVERAGE DEPTH : 25m [80ft]  
MAXIMUM DEPTH : 35m [115ft]  
       

THE LADY CHRISTINA WRECK

  
LOCATION : Western channel of Gaafaru Reef.  
ACCESS : Some resort islands make day excursions to Gaafaru Atoll, but usually only live-aboards visit this site.  
CONDITIONS : Very exposed in the southwest season.  Currents can be extremely strong along the reef.  
AVERAGE VISIBILITY : 25m [80ft]  
AVERAGE DEPTH : 30m [100ft]  
MAXIMUM DEPTH : 40m+ [130ft+]  
       
THE SEAGULL WRECK  
LOCATION   Eastern channel of Gaafaru Atoll  
ACCESS   Eriyadhu (2hr), Helengeli (2hr)  
CONDITIONS   Accessible in moderate conditions only.  Currents can be very strong in the northeast season.

HANS PASS  
LOCATION   Eastern channel of Gaafaru Atoll

CONDITIONS   Accessible in moderate conditions.  There is usually a swell in the northeast season.

KAASHIDHOO EAST FARU  
LOCATION   Northeast corner of Kaashidhoo fishing island.

CONDITIONS   Very exposed – there can be a huge swell.

AVERAGE DEPTH   15m [50ft]  
MAXIMUM DEPTH   30m+ [100ft+]  
       
KAASHIDHOO WEST WALL  
LOCATION   Northwest point of Kaashidhoo Atoll.  
ACCESS   Live aboard only.  
CONDITIONS   A huge swell can run over this reef.

NORTH MALE [ KAAFU ATOLL ] : SOUTHERN AREA  
VILIGILI FARU  
LOCATION  

South side of Viligili fishing island.

Club Med (30min), Kurumba (20min), Bandos (35min), Full Moon (35min), Giraavaru (30min)

  
CONDITIONS  

Sheltered from northwesterlies but exposed to westerly and southerly winds.  Currents can be strong, and there may be chop when the tide outflows from the atoll.

OLD SHARK POINT  
LOCATION   Southeast corner of Thila Fushi Channel.

CONDITIONS  

Exposed in southwesterly conditions, but sheltered from northwesterlies.  There can be strong current, surface can be rough if wind is against tide.
